If you've ever said what these teens are saying, you may want to enroll at TLC to help you get your high school diploma or GED, or to receive homeschool assistance, or as an alternative to being suspended from high school. The various programs help you make your own choices, offer smaller classes, and allow you to learn at your own pace.

The Teen Learning Center began in the late 1970s, providing an alternative educational opportunity to high school students in the Bloomington Community. It has since grown to serve more than 500 students each year, and now offers four individualized programs to fit the needs of people 12-18 years of age.

Last year, TLC students earned 149 high school credits, completed 30 high school diplomas, and obtained more than 100 GEDs. Sometimes a different path is the right one to take! If you think TLC can help you, check out the programs below....

If you want a high school diploma:

If you want to get a GED:

  • You may transfer to TLC from Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Aurora, or Edgewood high schools. However, you must have a referral from your home high school.
     

  • You may enter any time of the year and attend morning or afternoon classes, earning your credits whenever you complete coursework.
     
  • The credits you earn at TLC can apply toward your diploma from your high school.
     
  • You may transition back to your high school and carry over credits earned at TLC.
     
  • You may graduate any time after you've completed graduation requirements.

  • You may attend TLC after withdrawing from or being expelled from high school.
     

  • You may enter any time of the year and attend morning or afternoon classes, working at your own pace in a comfortable place.
     
  • No grades or credits are given, and the classes are small.
     
  • You may take your GED exam any time of the year, provided you are at least 17, can pass the pre-GED test, and have obtained an exit interview from the last high school you attended.

If you've been suspended from school:

If you're homeschooled and would like help:

  • You can be assigned to the Alternative-to-Suspension (ATS) program.
     

  • You'll work on assignments sent by your teachers or assistant principal.
     
  • You'll be supervised and taught by licensed teachers.
     
  • You'll write a reflective essay on the behavior that sent you to ATS.

  • You can take a check-up test that will point out your strong and weak areas.
     

  • You will receive an individualized study plan developed by a certified teacher.
     
  • You can obtain materials and receive progress udates.
     
  • You can take the GED pre-test.

At TLC, our staff of certified teachers provide individual instruction in a respectful, home-like environment.

A licensed school psychologist is available to assess students and assist with creating individual plans for special learning needs. In addition, a counselor can help you with both personal and career decisions.
