What did they say??
I often peruse the online version of my hometown newspaper (mainly for obituaries and pictures of people I know), and not long ago I came across this headline: "Treasurers here plea for building four-lane U.S. 50." I thought, "Now wait a minute, plea is a noun. You want the verb form, which is plead." But then I caught the first line of the article, which said, "Treasurers from a 33-county area heard [the] County's plea for four lanes for U.S. Route 50...." I about fell out of my chair! What's wrong with that, you ask? It means the headline really should have been: "Treasurers hear plea for building four-lane U.S. 50." Here is where I am; hear (which contains "ear") is what your ears do. Be really careful with that one! . . . (So, should I tell the people at the paper about their mistake?) |
